A Basic Guide to Farm Fencing

Fencing is a necessary element in an agricultural setting. Finding the right fencing type is important to keep your livestock – as well as your neighborhood – safe and secure. Good fences are not enough when it comes to farm animals. You also need to base your fencing decisions on livestock species since their natural behavior greatly varies. Here are some examples.

Fencing for Horses

Horses evolved to be near-constant walkers and are often flighty. Cheap barbed wire fences may appear effective at keeping horses in, but they should never be used with skittish animals. The classic paneled wood fence is a good option for hoses, though the main downside is that it can be high-maintenance. Vinyl requires minimal maintenance and looks visually appealing. However, the initial investment can be steep to some extent.

OK Brand offers a High-Tensile Max-Tight Horse Fence with square knots that provide extra vertical strength to withstand impact from large animals.

Fencing for Cattle

Cattle tends to be more forgiving with different types of fences. Since many cattle operations have large pastures for grazing, fencing choices for cattle are often cheap. Many farmers opt for barbed wire fences. However, this type of fencing poses a threat of skin lacerations. High-tensile fencing can be relatively affordable and used safely with cattle and hogs.

Fencing for Goats and Sheep

Goats can be aggressive and good at escaping. On small farms, this behavior can present a fencing challenge. Since goats and sheep are smaller and have the ability to wiggle, wood and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials are not usually appropriate for fences. Farmers opt for woven mesh fencing because it is durable and safe, and can prevent escapes. The Max-Tight Field Fence from OK Brand is also a reliable option, and it varies in heights and styles, accommodating a wide range of livestock.
