Basic Safety Measures for Your Home Workshop

There’s a reason why many engineering colleges require a safety course for their students right in their freshman year – safety is basic knowledge. If you’re building a workshop with metal building components, then it follows that you should also be aware of some basic safety checks to ensure that whatever project you take on in your shop, you’ll be minimizing unnecessary risks of accidents and injury.

Here are a few quick safety guidelines on operating a workshop from our skilled craftsmen at Metal Warehouse Inc.

Protective Personal Equipment

Invest in a good set of protective personal equipment or PPE. Of course, the types of equipment you’ll need will depend mostly on the type of workshop you’re building. However, basic equipment like closed shoes, welding masks and safety goggles and gloves are staples of any shop. So, whether you’re going to be working with metal panels, vehicles or just woodworks, don’t neglect to get and use PPE.

Fire Safety

Workshops, by nature, are prone to all sorts of accidents. Depending on your experience level, you may already know some fundamental fire safety precautions. As it is, you should also invest in some ready-to-use fire extinguishers. If possible, invest in more than one type of fire extinguishing equipment as you can never know what type of fire could start in your shop.

General Safety

Of course, don’t forget to include all other important safety measures for other types of activities you’ll be doing in your brand-new workshop. If you’re handling dangerous chemicals, make sure that you have a good place to dispose of leftover substances as well as measures to handle any potential spillage. Don’t neglect all safety harnesses and supports when you’re planning to work on heavy machinery in your shop. Safety helmets should also be worn at all times while you’re working.
