Behind many homes are small outbuildings called prefab sheds. A prefab, or prefabricated, shed is commonly used for storage or as a workshop space. It can come preassembled or be built from a kit. If you are planning to install a metal shed at the back of your home, you will need to find good metal building components. Here are the key features:
Strong Framing
It is common to build a metal shed around a galvanized steel frame. The framing serves as the skeleton of the shed and provides it with strength to withstand unstable weather. Some types of metal garden sheds with heavy-duty framing are more robust and, therefore, more expensive.
If you live in an area where heavy snowstorms and high winds occur frequently, make sure to look for a metal shed with a sufficient snow or wind-load rating.
Rust-Proof Materials
Rust is the number one enemy of metal panels and any metal building. If you want your garden shed to last for a long time, make sure you build one with materials that are resistant to rust. Look for a shed made of hot-dipped galvanized steel or aluminum. It also needs to be finished with a tough coating, such as baked-on polyester enamel, to better protect it from harsh elements. Do not forget to verify if all bolts and screws are corrosion resistant.
Doors and Locks for Security
Your metal shed may come with a sliding or regular hinged door. Some models may also utilize the up-and-over style of garage doors. It does not matter what type of style you use as long as your metal shed has an opening wide enough to move large items in and out of it.
Some metal sheds sport doors with some sort of locking mechanism. If you intend to store valuable items in your shed, look for a door with at least a three-point locking system. This high-security feature may include steel lock housings, reinforced joints and integral steel floors.
