Common Questions
Choosing the Right Product
Which metal panel can I use on a low-slope roof?
It depends how low. Our PBR and AG panels run down to a 3/4 inch in 12 slope with butyl tape sealant, and PBU down to 1:12. In standing seam, the 2 inch Mechanical Lock goes to 1/2:12 when it is double-locked, the 1-3/4 inch Snap Lock to 2:12, and the 1 inch Nail Strip needs 3:12 or steeper. The full table is on this page. Call (903) 465-6699 with your slope and we will confirm the right panel.
Which panels can be used for soffit?
The 12 inch Board and Batten panel is made for wall and soffit work. PBU and AG panels can be used for soffit as a marginal or special-use application. PBR and our standing seam panels are not recommended for soffit.
What gauge should my metal panels be?
26 gauge is the most common panel gauge for residential and light commercial, and it is the standard for PBR, PBU, AG, 1 inch Nail Strip and 12 inch Board and Batten. Our 1-3/4 inch Snap Lock and 2 inch Mechanical Lock standing seam panels are 24 gauge. Structural deck comes in 22, 20 and 18 gauge, and cold-formed structural shapes in 16, 14 and 12 gauge.
What is the difference between SMP and PVDF?
SMP (silicone-modified polyester) is our standard painted finish, carrying a 40-year paint warranty across 17 stock colors. PVDF, also known as Kynar, is the premium coating available on our 24 gauge standing seam panels, with a 35-year warranty and better long-term color and chalk resistance. Both are Sherwin-Williams coil coatings.
